Hey sellers!
As a Product Manager of the Square for Restaurants team, I wanted to clarify a few questions you might have related to settling tips. When you have tipping on paper receipts or reopen and keep enabled (see below), checks are pending until they are settled manually or automatically 36 hours later. If you have had issues with Square reports reflecting those sales a day or two later, this post is for you.
What is Reopen and Keep? (only available to sellers in the US)
Reopen and Keep is a setting that allows you to reopen a closed check and keep the original payment method used. This allows you to reopen checks, add or edit items in the check, and close the check without having to use the customers’ credit card information. This can be enabled or disabled in Square Dashboard -> Devices -> Service Settings -> Reopen Checks. When this is enabled, reopening a closed check and preserving the original payment method will delay when the check is settled for up to 36 hours.
What is tipping on paper receipts?
Tipping on paper receipts can be enabled in Square Dashboard -> Devices -> Select a specific device by doing the following:
Tipping enabled
Collect signatures enabled
Customer signs on printed receipt enabled
When tipping on paper receipts is enabled, customers will typically add their tip and sign on the given receipts. Servers will then update the transactions to include their appropriate tips. When this is enabled, transactions will take up to 36 hours to settle unless tips are manually settled beforehand.
What can I do?
You can use the Live Sales Report in the POS or the Live Sales filter in Dashboard Reports to get an accurate picture of the performance of your business that includes checks with unsettled tips. Specifically:
In the Square for Restaurants Point of Sale app you can view the Live Sales Report. The Live Sales Report considers open checks and closed checks. Because transactions with unsettled tips are considered open checks, you will be able to see the total value of sales for the day from the Live Sales Report on your POS.
In Dashboard you can view most reports for ‘All Checks’ which combines open checks and closed checks. This view considers the value of transactions with unsettled tips.
How do I settle tips?
When tips are settled you will see sales values included in sales reports on the Square for Restaurants Point of Sale app and in Dashboard. You can settle tips in the following ways:
You can settle tips on the Square for Restaurants Point of Sale app by going to Transactions and selecting the icon in the upper left corner.
You can also settle tips on the Square for Restaurants Point of Sale app by running the Close of Day report. When you run the Close of Day report all tips will be settled automatically.
All tips will automatically settle within 36 hours. If you have unsettled tips, and do not settle by using one of the above mentioned methods, tips will settle automatically.

Hi everyone, I’m wondering how you arrange your menu tiles. I’ve experimented with colors, photos of meals, and other elements, and now I’ve created some custom icons that I’m really enjoying. They’re simple, easy to identify the menu category, and look great on both larger tablet screens and the smaller handheld devices which was the most important as nothing really seems to translate to the smaller screens very well. Have you received any feedback from your staff on what you've tried for your menu tiles? Below are screenshots of what I just switched to

This is the most mind boggling omission from Square. They've been around long enough now to have this very simple basic feature available. It's almost unbelievable it hasn't; been done. I read posts about this from 2020!! still nothing... It is really simple. Square has categories for items. All we need is them to be grouped that way when you create a ticket. We need a ticket to print by category order. So, NOT multiple tickets printed. NOT different stations or coursing...those are actually HARDER to achieve than the simple functionality that still doesn't exist. I want to print one ticket, and all the drinks are together, then all the round sandwiches, then all the deserts etc. NOT just like items, just print items belonging to the same category together on the ticket. It's really amazing that it just doesn't do that by default as it makes so much sense and they already have the categories functionality built into the system! Please explain why it's 6 years since others opened this very request and it hasn't moved??

Curious how restaurant and bar owners here are handling customer referrals. A few things I keep hearing from F&B owners I talk to: Most are doing it manually (discount codes, handwritten cards, "tell them I sent you") Nobody's tracking who referred whom, so rewards are inconsistent When they try third-party apps, most are built for retail or salons, not restaurants For those of you running anything referral-related: Are you tracking it, and if so, how? What reward works best in your experience — free appetizer, gift card, % off next visit? Has anyone tried tying it to loyalty points through Square Loyalty? I've been working on this problem specifically for Square merchants (I built a tool called ViralRef), and I'm trying to learn what actually moves the needle for restaurants vs. what we've seen work for salons. Happy to share notes with anyone who's experimenting. — Alejandro, Miami

Hi- dealer here. On Tuesday, one of our customers' checks stopped autosettling at the end of their reporting period, as per their Dashboard settings. So Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning- nothing settled on its own. We changed the setting to make sure that reopening a check removed payments, as I've been reading this is a common bug-ish thing, and we DO have pre-authorizations enabled. But a majority of the checks created and paid for throughout the night didn't settle at the auto settle end of reporting period. So we tested this on our lab, and the same thing happened. I decided to check to see if there was a Stand update available- and yes, there was one released. 3 days ago on Tuesday. Is this a confirmed or alleged possibility that not updating to the most recent version of Square could stop checks from auto settling at the end of the reporting period or whatever setting you have it on? I know that updating my Carplay restores connection to my car if it's not connecting the right way. Wondering if this is a specific issue relating to not having auto updates on.
